Basic Skin Creation

This is an old tutorial on how to create your own skin.  I wrote this back in the day, but the site that hosts it has gone down, so I am placing it here while it is still useful.
It seems that some of the previous tutorials are out of date, so I am going to try my best at writing a updated one. Credits to Skinny for teaching me back in the day. This tutorial will cover how to get, change, test, and apply new textures to the characters in league of legends. If you want to change the 3d model please use the information you learn here in conjunction with Vampyroteuthis’ tutorial. (note, it uses this plugin)If you want to change the textures of spell effects (particles) please supplement this tutorial with what you learn from RichieSams tutorial .

1. Basic Information

To help you understand the rest of the tutorial here is some basic information about custom skinning in LoL that is good to know.

  • Custom skins are all done by replacing files inside your league of legends program with ones that have been modified by you or someone else.
    • This means that the changes are only on your computer, not the server, and that other people will not see the difference unless they replace their files as well.
    • The game loads the files it will use by name, if we want to replace a red texture with a blue one, we will need to save a blue texture with the name of the red texture! (then when the game opens the file name of the red texture, it gets a blue colored one, etc)
  • Most of the game files are no longer inside a .zip folder, but are instead inside special “Raf” files.
    • If you see a tutorial referencing “Heropack.zip” or a data folder, please use the information in this tutorial to find the files you need. You can use this to mentally update any other tutorial you read.
  • File extensions are important and help you understand what each file does, and how to open it
    • If you have not already, please use this tutorial to make sure you can see file extensions. http://www.granneman…showextensions/
    • DDS : This is a texture file, it is a 2d image that contains color and transparency data.
    • SKL : This is a skeleton file, it contains information about how to animate the 3d model
    • SKN : This is a “skin” file, but more importantly it contains the majority of the 3d information, such as how the model is shaped, and how textures fit onto it.
    • ANIM : This is a animation file that contains information of how to move a models skeleton over time.
    • TROYBIN : These are basically uneditable binary files that contain code information loaded dynamically by the game.
    • SCO : These are 3d files like SKN, but are normally found in particle effects
    • SCB : Same as SCO, just different format.
  • Please help make custom modification a positive part of the LoL Community.
    • Please share what you have learned and made with others, and look for people to help if you have time!
    • Please do not simply hand out unmodified riot made skins, be creative, try something new instead!

2. Getting the files you want to change

  • Most of the files for characters are stored inside “raf” files.
  • You will need a program to be able to open these. Please use SIU for this tutorial. (SIU is short for Skin Installer Ultimate)
  • Download the most recent version of SIU from here. Extract it someplace on your computer, and run the “Skin Installer Ultimate.exe” file.
  • Once it loads (yes let it update), go directly to the “==Skin Creation==” tab
  • This area of the program presents you with many of the files inside LoL, organized as best it can. You may use other parts of this view in other tutorials (or just experimenting) but for now, please expand the “models” folder.
    • Please note, not all characters are in the models folder, you may need to go to the “raf” folder, then data , then characters, to find them all.
  • Check mark the characters or skins you wish to edit. You want to make sure that you put a check box on the DDS files (the images) as well as the SKN files (the 3d model, so you can preview)
  • Once you have your files selected, right click and export them someplace on your computer

3. Changing your texture files

  • You will need a program in order to edit and save DDS texture files, you have a few options, though this tutorial will cover photoshop.
    • You can get photoshop from here.
      • Photoshop will not be able to edit DDS files without the help of a plugin. You can get the one you need from here.
    • If you do not like or can not afford photoshop, you can get Paint.net from here, no plugin needed.
    • You can also use GIMP if you install its DDS plugin from here.
  • Once you have a program that can edit dds files, please load up the DDS file of your skin that you want to change (that you got from step 2). Either drag and drop it, or use the File menu, and open it.
  • You will be presented with a flat image of the textures used on the model, you can paint on it or make changes to it as you like. If you are not familiar with the Image editing program you are using, please google a quick tutorial to save time later.
  • Once you have made some changes to your texture, you will need to save it before you can preview it.
    • Make sure you choose the file extension of “DDS” in your save drop down.
    • Make sure you give it the same name as the file you are changing so it is loaded by the game (as mentioned from step 1)
    • If you have the option, please pay attention to the type of DDS texture you are saving. For character files that do not have transparency use DXT1. For files that do, use DXT3 or something with explicit alpha.
    • Make sure the type is a 2d texture if you have the option, and let your program generate MIP maps as well.

4. Previewing your changes (optional, but recommended)

  • You can skip this step and go straight to step 5 if you want to start a custom game and look at the result in game
  • You can use siu to preview textures for free thanks to code from SapphireStorm (although please note this doesn’t work as well as it used to, you may want to try another option)
    • Open SIU from step 2
    • go to the “==Add new skin==” tab, click the “add files” button, and select the DDS texture that you just saved. (or if you made a 3d model in a different tutorial, select all the files you changed)
      • You can also just drag and drop the files onto siu if you want to save time
    • Type in a name for the skin to appear in the list
      • If you want to keep testing the same files, feel free to use the same name and choose the “update” option
    • Follow the prompts or click the “Add to database” button
    • Go to the “==Install Existing Skins==” Tab, find the skin you just added, and right click on it, then choose “* Preview Skin*”
  • You can use photoshop cs5 extended to preview
    • You must first convert the SKN file into a OBJ so photoshop can read it.
      • Please use this converter by thispawn
      • Direct the input to the skn file that you got from step 2 and press convert.
    • Drag and drop the obj file you made (or use file -> open menu)
    • You will now see a preview of the model, we need to load the texture you made onto it
    • Double click the preview of the layer in the layers windows, to open up the 3d tools box
    • Underneath the object, you will see a sqaure texture that photoshop is using to color it
    • Click this texture, then next to “diffuse” use the drop down and select load texture
    • Posted Image
    • Direct this to your DDS file and you are good to go.
    • (You can also use this to draw directly on your model if you want)
  • You can use UV Mapper Pro to preview your model
    • You can get UVMapper from here
    • You must first convert the SKN file into a OBJ so photoshop can read it.
      • Please use this converter by thispawn
      • Direct the input to the skn file that you got from step 2 and press convert.
    • Open UvMapper and open the obj you just made to see the model
    • Save your DDS texture as a jpeg for it to work with UVMapper
    • Then go into your UvMapper window and go texture=>load (ctrl+ B) and locate the .jpg file
  • You can use maya to preview your texture
    • This is a bit more advanced, and I am going to assume you know some maya basics.
    • Follow the tutorial at the very beginning to use thispawns maya plugin to load the skn files from step 2
    • Open the hypershade panel, and create a new “surface shader”.
    • Click it, use the drop down in the attributes window to change the color to a file, then set the source to the .dds file
    • select your 3d model, then right click the surface shader you made, and assign it to your selection.
    • (you can also alternatively use the “create photoshop link” inside the uv editor window if you feel comfortable with this)

5. Getting your textures in game

  • Go to the “==Install Existing Skins==” Tab, find the skin you just added
  • Click the check box next to the skin on the left, then click the “install skin” button bellow.
  • Open up lol and test it out in a custom game

    • Hello. I really don’t know. It’s an old software provided by 3rd party (I don’t remember who made it), so we cannot offer any support with this.
It used to work in the past, but it’s been a long time we didn’t test.

  5. When I click “Preview this skin” there’s no model there. I went into a custom game and the skin just looked normal. I made sure that the skin itself was selected when in “skin creation” but it’s still not showing up in the preview skin right click option but when I just click on the the skin in the “install existing skin” tab the preview of the dds I made is there. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Help, please 😀 (I just recolored Piltover Customs Blitzcrank so that he has pink flames using paint.net)
